for the love of palms…

I’ve lived most of my entire life in tropical climates…from Naples to New Orleans to Sarasota to St. Petersburg and back to Naples again…I’ve always been in the warmer climates.

Thing is, I can’t STAND the heat! There isn’t a day that doesn’t go by when I long to live in the cool climates of New England or upstate New York. To smell the seasons change, to bundle up in the winter and longingly look forward to spring. Nope…instead I’ve been stuck in weather that resembles hell for pretty much my entire life. And summer in Florida is total hell on Earth. The only real joy is anything that has AC….or totally submerged in a pool or in the Gulf of Mexico. And even that isn’t always great as sometimes the Gulf water is so warm you feel like you are in a slow cooker….

But there is one thing I absolutely love about Florida and the the tropics: palm trees! With my favorite of the palms being the date palm. I’m not really sure why I love this palm so much so other than the fact that when I see one, I feel nostalgic and I am taken back to images of Casablanca or the shores of some far away exotic land like Majorca or Morocco.

It’s a romantic image that this palm strikes up in my head. And in general, palms are cool trees because they are symbolic to the place I’ve lived in most of my life. And while yes, I will rant and yell about the heat, palms are totally cool because they remind me of home.

So back to the image! This palm was shot at the Village on Venetian Bay. Let me get off track one last time…:)

…If you visit Naples, definitely stop by the Village. It’s a landmark here in Naples and they have the BEST stores where you will find some of the very most unique gifts and art. My three favorite stores here are Rose de Paris and Provence, The Paper Merchant and Danieli.

Rose de Paris boasts the very best selection of fine linens I’ve ever seen, straight from the country side of France. The also have an excellent selection of fine fabrics, which are absolutely sublime.

Need unique stationary? Look no further than The Paper Merchant. I often shop here when I need unique stationary for handwritten thank you cards for my brides or one-of-a-kind gift certificates.

And last but definitely not least, Danieli. This is a boutique that boasts unique gifts and furniture, which will surely please the hardest-to-please loved one on your list! If you are in Naples, Florida, make sure to visit this fantastic store!

And so here is my first palm tree post for the daily photo rambling….enjoy!

evil green

We finally got started on our daily photo rambling. The idea is to take a new image at least once a day and blog about it here. Of course, that’s the idea! And well the reality will probably be something completely different!

The first entry was shot today by Rene. He used the stand-in technique for macro when you don’t have a macro handy: an inverted 50mm wide open. That’s right, he just took the lens off, turned it around and hand held it over the camera opening. The DOF was crazy small here but he managed to shoot this killer image of a green WAX giraffe and her baby. You can’t see the baby in the picture, just the mom’s face. And yes, you read correctly, I did write a ‘green wax giraffe’. This was one of those overpriced zoo gifts that they con you into buying. When we went to the Miami zoo for Ali’s birthday, we were conned into handing over not one, not two, and no, not three, but FIVE dollars for this POS! It’s made on the spot with this weird machine that kind of looks like the old school fortune teller machines at the fairs. But instead of the creepy he/she fortune teller spitting out a generic fortune, the wheels grind and twist out this creepy green mama giraffe and her baby.

So Ali LOVES this thing AND I have the distinct pleasure of having it reside in my car. More precisely, in the side pocket of the door, along with all the other ton of junk she’s accumulated and can’t leave home without. In the picture, the giraffe has a kind of evil look about it. Hmmmm. I can’t help but wonder if that’s just a bit of Rene seeping into the portrait. He seems to have that gift….. Those cool disco-looking lights in the back are actually light reflections coming off a bottle of Grolsch. I LOVE this shot…it’s just cool…

rain, colds and no internet!

So we spent a day at home, shut in fighting colds and with no internet! Thanks Comcast! So what do you do when it rains all day, you have a summer cold AND you can’t surf? Well, we built a super-galactic crazy spud Potato Head family! Yeah, you could say we had some time on our hands! :)

We had so much fun building this family that we decided to document them. Ali even tried her hand at taking a few pictures with my camera and didn’t do a bad job at all! Eli totally wanted to turn herself into a spud. It was great to have a day off with my girls, playing with plastic body parts and assembling vegetables!

Definitely found a perfect day this week….

download firefox!

Having been in the computer business for the last 10 years, Rene totally knows his way around computers and the internet. So he wanted to share this bit of information with everyone: tomorrow is download day at Firefox (FF)!

By far, FF is the best browser out there. If you haven’t tried it yet, download it tomorrow. FF is having a “set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours” day, tomorrow!

Give it a try if you haven’t already, switch from whatever browser you are using (especially IE) to a great browser tomorrow! Just click the graphic below:

shoes, shoes & more yummy shoes!

On Monday I posted a few images in a “Dedicated to the Shoe Queens” thread over at the Digital Wedding Forum. The thread had been resurrected and showcased some truly fantastic details of bridal shoes.

The photographs covered the gamut from Prada to Converse and even some totally killer white engraved Doc Marten boots (of which I still have several pairs of in my closet!). Of course, most of the gal photographers on the thread were totally all about Christian Louboutin shoes…and without a doubt of course!

One of the reasons I love to photograph weddings is because you get to see so many wonderful fashion styles from cakes, to shoes to dresses to jewelery. And some of my very, very favorite detail shots are shoe shots. So this was a great excuse for me to go through some of my weddings and pull out my favorites! :) Aside from just loving shoes, I can happily admit to having a shoe-photographing fetish (with cakes coming in second and rings in the not-so-distant third place)!

Some of my more memorable shoe subjects include a pair of Louboutin’s that I had the pleasure of photographing that belong to a beautiful English bride. Her wedding was an amazingly fantastic special day held at the South Seas Island Resort in Captiva. Side note: If you are looking for a venue on the beach that not only boasts exquisite views AND fabulous service, look no further! South Seas is one of my very favorite venues around Southwest Florida!

I also photographed a wedding in Tampa that included a fantastic pair of gold Dolce and Gabbana slip ons that were to die for! Simply sublime!

On my must-shoot list: Jimmy Choo, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, and Manolo Blahnik! I’m not asking for much am I? :)

Oh, and check out the very last pair of shoes in the gallery…those are Ali’s favorite dress up shoes. BOTH my girls are shoe-rus in training. Helena’s favorites are her rasberry Disney Crocs!

~ Enjoy and happy Wednesday…Astrid ~

we are sending you good vibes, nic!

We were supposed to shoot Nic and Brittaney’s e-shoot during Memorial day weekend here in Naples and in downtown Fort Myers, but Nic hurt his knee pretty badly during a basketball game. He’s been off of it since then and is scheduled for surgery today. The great news is that his doctors are saying he will be ready for the big day this November at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. We’ve never shot there but have been visiting since we were kids. We can’t wait to be a part of this very special wedding!

We want to wish Nic all the best today and during his rehabilitation and we are keeping him and his family in our prayers for a speedy recovery!
