The Junkroski Family session

Last weekend we went out and photographed the Junkroski family at one of our favorite Naples beaches. It was awesome! And while we didn’t get the typical sunset that Naples is so well known for, (there were just too many clouds), we had spectacular light that worked very well with the mood.

Personally, I prefer this kind of light during sunset as the light makes the colors so very rich, which makes for beautiful and breathtaking images! And I LOVE shooting family sessions. Having kids in the mix at the beach makes for some great moments and I don’t really have to do much other than let the family be themselves. The Junkroski’s made our session so easy….this is why we love what we do!

Thanks Pat, Isa, Chiara and Julian…you guys rock! :)

Earth Day!

We celebrated Earth Day by visiting the Conservancy of Southwest Florida this weekend. They are hosting their free Earth day celebration and what a perfect day it was! Not only did we have a lot of fun, but we learned a lot of new information about conservation, tips on going green and what we could do to lessen our impact on the Earth.

Going green is definitely an important topic in our household and for our business, too. Check back soon because we are working on some new additions to our album lines: green albums! We want to offer animal and Earth friendly options to our brides and grooms and their families and we will have more information on that soon! For my Brides, I will also be posting a section on green wedding planning tips, ideas and suggestions that will help you plan a greener wedding. Lots of good information on green weddings coming soon! If we all make small differences, imagine how much it will add up!

Back to our Earth Day celebration, the day started off great! We met with some of Ali’s pre-school friends and of course, first on the agenda was face painting. The lines are always uber long for face painting, and we will sometimes stand around for over half an hour waiting for someone to paint some sort of pink silly thing on Ali’s face. She totally loves it though, so missing out is never an option! To kill some time, Helena made an awesome necklace necklace.

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is a GREAT place to visit! Not only do they serve a vital role in our community here in Naples, but they offer a lot of fun programs for kids, while teaching them to respect our Earth and the animals that live on it.

Some of the cool animals we got to see were in the Discovery Center, where you can learn hands-on with great interactive exhibits with animals like sea turtles, snakes, baby alligators and even a touch tank! Ali was totally into the Lion fish. He was truly magnificent and seemed to totally love all the attention of the gawking kids!

The snakes were cool, too. And they had a big pile of snake skins, which Ali wasn’t afraid of and touched with wide-eyed awe. My favorite was the sea turtle. What a beautiful animal!

All in all, it was a perfect day and we learned so many good lessons. Happy Earth Day!

the grande loves us!

Great news! The Naples Grande Beach Resort totally digs our work and has placed us on their referral list! We are so honored and totally excited to be working with such a great establishment. Thank you!

We have been hard at work creating a special video for the Grande to send to their brides. We wanted to share it with everyone…enjoy!

Have a fantastic day!

Sunday at Cambier Park

So we were on the quest for another perfect day after a string of not-so-perfect ones, and we had no problems finding this one, finally!

The girls and Rene had been sick all week, sniffly noses, sneezing, stuffy heads…so we stayed home most of the week and skipped going out. But Sunday everyone was feeling better and definitely stir-crazy! Time to get out and EXPLORE!

So we packed the Bug and headed to Cambier Park, which is by far our favorite park! It’s totally nostalgic for me (I saw the Wailers play here when I was a junior in high school), the girls love it and its close to home. Plus, we have all the activity of 5th Avenue, the Pier, 3rd Street and my aunt and uncle live in Aqualane, so we are close by for visits and special treats.

But what I really love about this park is that it has that big, open space, comfy tree shade, grassy knoll, happy-people, yummy smells, busy city (well, busy for Naples anyway) kind of feel to it. It just has GREAT mojo, whereas some of the other parks around Naples just don’t have it. So yeah, Cambier Park definitely has good park mojo! AND it meets with Al’s approval for a super kid-friendly playground complete with mister and pirate ship!

The park is always bustling with activity, too but never feels crowded or cramped. The Norris Community Center is right there, so is the Arthur L. Allen Tennis Center (where we might be signing Ali up for tennis lessons!), along with the super cool Bandshell, where all the bands come to play.

We totally didn’t know it but the Naples Daily News Jazz Band was playing their free concert that day at the Bandshell, so it was really perfect timing. You know the kind, where everything just works out perfectly and you don’t plan or pack or direct or call or instruct, it just happens and everything and everyone cooperates!

The weather could not have been more perfect. There was just enough of a breeze to carry the popcorn smell around, NO HUMIDITY, which is totally fantastic for Florida, and it was cool-ish, too. The girls just relished the weather, the smells, the sounds of the band and the grass beneath their toes.

I love this picture of my girls. This image totally represents that day…

Ali and Eli running through what is another perfect day in Naples, Florida!

Helena really digs trees right now. We have TONS of trees at the house: big trees, tiny trees, SUPER tall trees, fruit trees, climbing trees and we even have one the shape of a ginormous egg right on the front lawn. I will have to take a picture of it for the blog…but Helena is totally into trees now and when she spotted this palm at the park, she HAD to make a bee-line right for it…

Helena makes a bee-line for the palm tree!

And here is my little tree-hugger…

Helena the tree-hugger!

In this picture, I was trying to capture some beautiful back and side light while Rene corralled Helena after her tree episode…we had to LITERALLY tear her away from this palm. Needless to say we received many a chuckle from the senior crowd milling around…

The von Liebig Art Center is right at the beginning of Cambier Park and is home to some great collections of contemporary visual arts. You can check out their current exhibitions from here. In the entrance they have this awesome elephant sculpture, which of course is a prime spot for portraits of little ones…

So…on the quest for the perfect day, and we definitely ended the week with a doozy!

Until next time and have your own perfect day…

Birthday weekend @ the zoo!

Ali’s birthday was Wednesday, the 26th. Our angel turned 4! I really can’t believe that she’s already four. It just doesn’t feel like 4 years have gone by. And I can’t remember my life before I had my girls.

Before we had kids, everyone would say things like, “it goes by so fast” and “they grow so quick” and “enjoy it while you still can”! Now I really know what they meant and it’s depressing….it seems like just yesterday I was holding that tiny, bald, chubby baby in my arms…and now she’s a princess-loving, face-painting, rainbow-puppy dog-unicorn-pink little girl of 4.

When Ali turned two, we had this giant bash at a local kid gym-type establishment. We spent a lot of money and invited all of Ali’s little friends from preschool and their parents. It was overwhelming for all of us to say the least, but most of all for Ali. She didn’t participate in a lot of things because it was just too much. All that attention was on her and she just didn’t know how to deal with it. Bad parents! We played the ‘whose throwing the best birthday party’ game that year and our daughter ended up losing out in the end. She would have been so much happier with something smaller, with just our immediate family…lesson learned! I won’t make that mistake again unless she specifically asks for it… :)

Instead of a ginormous party with all her preschool friends this year, Ali chose to go to the Miami Metro Zoo for her birthday weekend. Now, for those of you who don’t know me, I am totally nuts about animals. Not PETA nuts, but I don’t stand for animal abuse and I am all for animal respect and compassion. As such, I am not really into zoos. As a matter of fact, I can’t stand zoos. Why? I just don’t believe wild animals have any business in captivity. Watching animals languish in enclosures just doesn’t do it for me….and this zoo is no exception.

Suffice it to say that most of the animals looked miserable and exhibited zoo-syndrome. In particular was a massive, beautiful, ancient elephant that seemed to exude stark stir craziness. The entire time I stared at him (over half an hour as I waited for Ali to play in the water park), this elephant stared ahead, not moving other than to sway from left to right in a rhythmic mad trance. It was depressing to say the very least. As I stood there watching this majestic animal, I listened to what people were saying about him. Some laughed, saying he looked like he was dancing. Others didn’t understand what he was doing and thought he might be agitated trying to get to the female (who was standing in a small pool of water compulsively dipping her trunk in and out of the water), and only one person accurately recognized his demise. Most people thought he was funny and almost everyone edged him to ‘move closer for a picture’ or ‘do something funny’.

So, yes, I am a mom against zoos! Before I had Ali, I thought long and hard about what I would do when the time came and Ali asked to go to the zoo. I thought I would have the backbone to say, no. But I am too weak when it comes to my girls…still, as she gets a bit older, our visits will be less and less frequent and I will start educating her on why I feel the way I do. And I will let her make her own decision regarding zoos and of course, deep down inside I hope she agrees with the way I see zoos.

This is the only animal image I am showing. Ali absolutely LOVES giraffes. Her love for giraffes is second only to her absolute PASSION for dinosaurs (yep, she says she wants to be a paleontologist when she grows up). She knows all the scientific names of the dinosaurs and has a HUGE collection of dinosaurs, even more so than things that are pink!

So other than the petting zoo (which was a joke), Ali totally wanted to participate in the giraffe feeding station. For $2, we would get a couple of leaves of Kale (literally, three leaves for $2), which the giraffes would gingerly inhale with their long tongues. Ali was a bit scared, but after a while she totally got the hang of it!

Feeding the giraffes

They had a dinosaur section, with a large sand pit where you could dig for fossils. Of course, this was a big hit with Ali. But she wasn’t too fond of this guy…

And as usual, Helena was intrigued with all things teeny, tiny and microscopic. I swear, this little girl has the eyes of a hawk! Here she is digging for microscopic specimens at the fossil sand pit.

On Sunday we dragged ourselves to the Sawgrass Mills Mall….an obscene conglomeration of stores, outlets, bad food reservoirs and all things under the sun. Our destination was the Sanrio store…where anything Hello Kitty can be had. Now, I have to admit to being a HUGE Hello Kitty fanatic. Have been since I was 4! And of course, Ali is no exception! We did pick up a few goodies here….definitely worth the hell we paid traversing this ‘mall’.

While at the mall, we had lunch at the Rainforest Cafe, which was the other reason we made the trip to the other coast. Ali loves this place! It really is cool inside. I’d totally love a room decorated with all the vegetation and stuff this place has. But dusting and cleaning would be a NIGHTMARE!

As a bonus to all the mayhem that this outlet mall provided us with, we had the genuine pleasure of waiting in line for 45 minutes with other little screaming pink girl things, all so that they could have things like this painted on their shiny, happy little faces:

Face painting

Only for my girls…..this time it was a perfect weekend!
